Beyond the Dark

Every story has a beginning, and this is mine. After years of sharing my thoughts on various blogs and social media, Beyond the Dark was my first step into gathering my words more formally. Whilst my style and craft have evolved significantly since its publication, it still retains a precious place in my heart. I keep it here for readers who want to see and understand the heart of my work—and because, although a little rough around the edges, I know these words still resonate with many.
You can find my most recent work on my author blog.
‘Who will sit in the dark? The cold and damp, the dank and wretched stench-filled places? We are so desperate for the light, to bask in its glorious warmth, but even the light brings shadows.’
Journey alongside the author as she delves into the wounds of her heart, grapples with difficult questions and faces her shadows. Intricately weaving together poetry, musings, art, quotes and prayers, Beyond the Dark invites readers to reflect and go deeper with God. Unashamedly honest and expressive, it explores the very essence of what it means to be human in a complex world; the unfathomable depths of God’s love for us; and the often uncomfortable process of becoming the people He created us to be.
‘Laura is one of those rare writers that can perfectly capture the interplay between heartache and hope. This book gives a generous space for our own darkness and pain walking us through it towards the promise of light. She beautifully articulates those gentle, profound truths that make us feel seen and heard and loved.’
Isabelle Schuler, best-selling author of Lady MacBethad
‘Laura has crafted a handbook for the journey through life’s trauma and change. The way she manages to use words, space and imagery to tell the stories of our inner world is really quite stunning. Laura writes as if she’s inside our mind, feeling the things we feel, and in so doing reminds us that we are all going through similar things. She isn’t afraid to stare at the ugliness and beauty of our lives. I find myself coming back to her writings when I have no way to explain or communicate what my heart feels. Laura gives us the words and the pictures we all need to free our hearts. Thank you Laura’
Elaine Simpson, The Kingdom Choir
‘Real, raw, and relatable, Laura has provided a beautiful, creative resource to help us be honest with ourselves and with God, whilst drawing us, in hope, to his welcoming healing love.’
