One of the most destructive practices I’ve witnessed within the church is using bible verses to judge, shame, dismiss and over-spiritualize our emotions- particularly those more challenging, uncomfortable emotions such as fear and anger.
We are not our emotions, but, they are valuable information- invitations to understand ourselves better, connect with God more deeply, grow in our faith and allow His healing work to take place within us. When we avoid facing these emotions we miss out on the richness, depth and beauty of life with Jesus. Moreover, we often stay stuck in these emotions and consequently, in our spiritual and emotional development (whether we’re aware of it or not). And this my friends, is exactly where the enemy wants you to stay!
